5 Ways to Avoid Wasting Energy in Your Fairbanks Alaska Home This Thanksgiving

As you prepare to host guests in your Fairbanks, Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla, Palmer or North Pole home this Thanksgiving, you likely have a to-do list that is keeping you on schedule. From cleaning the oven to changing lightbulbs to clearing off the sidewalk and driveway, there are many tasks that will require your energy in order to be fully prepared for the upcoming holiday.
But while we're on the subject of energy, it's time to take a look at how much your home will use on this one, single day. Thanksgiving can be quite an energy gobbler, but if you mind the following five ways to avoid wasting it, you'll be much happier when you receive your next bill.
Install a dimmer switch in your dining room
You'll be spending the majority of Thanksgiving Day around your dining table, so start by saving energy there. Install a dimmer switch on your light fixture and each time you dim the light by 10 percent, you'll double the lifespan of the bulb. Dimmer switches can cost as little as ten dollars, but will save you immensely over the lifetime of the lightbulb.
Lower your thermostat
With more people gathering in your home and the oven running, it's likely to be much warmer. Lower your thermostat a few degrees and turn on your ceiling fan. The oven will keep the house warm and the ceiling fan will distribute the heat around the room.
Plan your menu accordingly
Plan your menu around side dishes that can cook while the turkey is in the oven. If these dishes can cook at the same temperature as the turkey, you ultimately reduce the amount of time it will need to be running, not to mention it's easier for the cook!
Use ceramic or glass pans
Did you know ceramic and glass pans retain heat so well that you can turn down your oven's temperature by up to 25 degrees and achieve the same result? Use these pans while cooking your Thanksgiving feast and keep in mind that the dishes will continue to cook after they have been removed from the oven.
Use your dishwasher
You may not think about the dishwasher when it comes to saving energy, but with all of the dishes you'll have after Thanksgiving, this appliance will save on energy, water and time! Wait until you've fully loaded the dishwasher before running it and stop the cycle before it reaches heat-dry. You can open the door and let the dishes air dry.
