As of tomorrow, the winter season will have officially arrived in Fairbanks. Where has the time gone? As the calendar finally catches up with the weather, many Alaskans will find themselves shopping for last-minute gifts and making their final preparations for the holidays. While the weekend before Christmas is always a busy one, we encourage you to take a break from your to-do list and get in the holiday spirit with a celebration of the winter season. This Saturday, December 21st, the Downtown Association of Fairbanks is gearing up to continue a Winter Solstice tradition that Alaskans look forward to each and every year.

Each December, Fairbanks celebrates Winter Solstice like nowhere else in the Northern hemisphere – and this year is no exception! On Saturday, December 21st, Alaskans will find a variety of family-friendly activities going on around downtown Fairbanks. From 11:00am – 3:00pm, children of all ages will enjoy getting their photos taken with Santa at River City Café and Espresso. Then, be sure to visit Mrs. Claus, who will be handing out special gifts at the Fairbanks Community Museum and Dog Mushing Museum from 2:00pm – 6:00pm. What’s more, Cocoa the reindeer will be making her way down 2nd Avenue from 4:00pm – 8:00pm, visiting numerous shops throughout the evening. As the Winter Solstice celebration comes to a close, the Alyeska Pipeline Celebration of Lights, a fireworks show, will light up the sky in downtown Fairbanks at 8:00pm.

As we begin the final countdown to 2014, there’s no better way to commemorate a year full of personal and professional triumphs than by celebrating with family and friends in downtown Fairbanks. Between photos with Santa, visiting with live reindeer and a fabulous firework display, Fairbanks’ Winter Solstice event is going to be one to remember. We hope to see you out and about and enjoying the festivities!
