Where can one partake in outhouse races, snowshoe softball, and leaf blower hockey? At the 2014 Anchorage Fur Rendezvous, of course! Known locally as Fur Rondy or just plain “Rondy,” this annual event draws visitors from throughout the world to participate in wild and fun winter games over a period of 10 days. What can one expect this year? The 2014 Anchorage Fur Rendezvous promises to deliver an unforgettable experience, and the action is just starting to heat up.
The 2014 Anchorage Fur Rendezvous takes places from February 21st – March 2nd, 2014. During this last week of February, Anchorage transforms into the number one winter carnival in the world, dazzling visitors with demonstrations of Alaskan tradition and unique twists on traditional winter sports. It all started in 1935 when an Anchorage citizen decided to establish a winter festival to add some excitement to an otherwise long and brutal season. What started as a three-day sports tournament has turned into a week-long celebration of Alaskan culture and tradition that folks look forward to each and every year.
As you might expect, there’s a lot of ground to cover at this year’s Fur Rondy event. The next nine days are chock full of athletic, cultural, and just plain wacky attractions that are guaranteed to create a lasting impression.
