How to Keep Your Home in Fairbanks, Anchorage Alaska Warm This Winter

Whether you live in Fairbanks or Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, Wasilla or North Pole, winter in Alaska can be a wonderful time of year. However, when the temperatures dip low and your home isn't prepared to keep you warm, your attitude toward the season can take a turn. We recently shared a few tips for preparing your Alaskan home for winter, but the following are especially important for staying cozy through the cold months ahead.

Weatherstripping

Alaska may see blustery conditions during the winter, but the inside of your home should not. Install weatherstripping along drafty windows and doors to keep the cold out and if done correctly, you could save as much as 20 percent on heating bills. Adding weatherstripping is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to keep heat inside.

Repair drafty doors

If you have a door in your Fairbanks or Anchorage home that is known to be drafty, add a door sweep along the bottom. These are, oftentimes, rubber strips that seal the gap at the bottom of the door. 

Fix or add more insulation

Insulation is what keeps your Alaskan home warm in the winter, so don't neglect any old or faulty insulation in the attic or basement. These are two areas where you can lose a great deal of heat this time of year. Also be sure to check for gaps or places where heat can escape, like the attic door or even cable holes, and fill them in with new insulation or additional seals.

 Maintain your furnace

Your heating system will be working overtime this winter— don't forget to schedule routine maintenance or make time for a check-up. Homeowners in Alaska can take it upon themselves to clean registers and replace furnace filters, but it's worth hiring a pro to ensure the furnace is in good shape. Add rugs and window coverings

One of the easiest ways to warm up your home in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer or North Pole is to simply cover the floors with a throw rug and install window coverings. Hardwood floors are always nice—and one thing homebuyers are fond of— but not when the temperatures drop below zero!
